Garland police say they believe a man was intoxicated when he drove
the wrong way on Interstate 635 and crashed head on into a car, killing
its driver and injuring her two children.
About 5:14 a.m., Dallas police received two 911 calls about a
Chevrolet Tahoe going the wrong way on the westbound side of I-635,
Dallas police spokeswoman Melinda Gutierrez said.
Dallas PD assigned two units to go search for the Tahoe and notified
Garland PD because the car appeared to be heading toward the
Dallas-Garland border on I-635, Gutierrez said.
“It’s the freeway so you’ve got to be really careful,” she said.
About a minute later, the Tahoe barreled into a smaller Chevrolet SUV
moving westbound — in the right direction — near the Jupiter Road exit,
Garland PD spokesman Joe Harn said.
A woman driving the smaller SUV died at the scene.
Two children believed to be hers — a baby and a girl eight or nine years old — were taken to Children’s Medical Center Dallas.
The baby had non life-threatening injuries. The girl was in critical condition and was undergoing surgery as of 8:15 a.m.
Police have not released the names of the victims or the wrong-way
driver, who was not injured and taken into custody at the scene.
Harn said he doesn’t know what charges the man will face, but said intoxication manslaughter is a possibility.
